Recap
Flames recovered from a 3rd period 2 goal deficit to secure a point, but Sheffield Steelers secured the win with a powerplay goal seconds from penalty tiebreakers. Mathieu Gosselin had Flames holding a lead through 20 minutes thanks to his goal at 18:04. Early in the 2nd, Steelers levelled through Mitch Balmas and they remained deadlocked at the close of the set. Early in the 3rd a Dominic Cormier strike set Steelers to their first lead of the contest. Evan Jasper at 48:38 doubled the difference, but a pair of Flames goals 37 seconds apart from Gosselin and Charlie Curti had the game all square at 3 each. Less than 6 minutes from time a double minor for high sticking to Sean Comrie forced Flames to kill the bulk of the remaining regulation clock down a man and they did so successfully to force extra time. In overtime, after Flames failed to take advantage of a 4 on 3 powerplay, Steelers had the same opportunity and they made theirs count with 24 seconds to go when Balmas secured the winner. Taz Burman made 41 saves on 45 shots while Matt Greenfield turned away 18 of 21. Gallery |
