Canadian Defenceman James Shearer has been added to the Flames roster.  The 27 year old began this season at ECHL Utah Grizzlies before a short stint in Hungary that preceded his UK return.

With Coventry Blaze last season, the 5’10”, 195lb skater iced 50 games between league and cup competition, scoring 3 goals and 15 points.

After 4 seasons at USports University of Calgary Dinosaurs, between 2018 and 2022, where he made 74 starts with 11 goals and 32 points and collected a Canada West All-Rookie selection in his first season, the native of Brandon, Manitoba embarked on a pro career at Grizzlies.  He bagged 11 points in 13 starts immediately following his collegiate season in 2021-2022, then added 6 goals and 17 points in his first full pro campaign, icing 54 games in the 22-23 term.

Shearer played 166 Western Hockey League games with Brandon Wheat Kings where he recorded 13 goals and 38 assists over 3 seasons and appeared in the Memorial Cup national title tournament in 2015-2016.  His junior career began in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League at Steinbach Pistons in 2014-2015 when he iced 48 games and had 38 points to get an All-Rookie Team nod and take home the Rookie of the Year award.

“With our disastrous injury situation at the back, we have been playing way too short for far too long,” explained Head Coach Paul Dixon, "and he will likely start as Injured reserve cover.  "

“We have been looking for guys who can come in and fill some gaps. It has taken longer than we had hoped, but we are pleased to have come to an agreement with James.”

“Not only is he a quality player who will immediately take some of the load from our overworked crew, but he is a veteran of EIHL play and knows exactly what to expect so his adjustment period should be fairly short.”

“We don’t yet have a timeline for when he can get into the lineup, and it will not be in time for Jan 11th, but we are working as fast as we can to make all the arrangements for his first start.”
