After 3 seasons away, former EIHL 1st All-Star Team Defenceman Jamal Watson will return to Flames colours.  The 5’11”, 180lb skater made his league debut under Spectrum’s roof in 2021-2022 when he led all Defenceman in points and assists. That season, he scored 15 goals as part of a 60 point haul.

Since then, the 30 year old has skated in ICEHL with Innsbruck where he had 10 goals and 30 points in 40 starts ahead of a pair of DEL2 campaigns at ESV Kaufbeuren where 102 games yielded 72 points from 21 goals and 51 assists.

The native of Calgary, Canada iced 4 terms with USport side Mount Royal University Cougars where he scored 29 goals and 78 points in 109 regular season starts topped off by a nearly point a game run in playoffs with 16 from 17 appearances.  During his opening set combining academics with athletics, Watson was named to the Canada West conference All-rookie team.

Prior to his university career, the 5’11”, 180lb skater spent 4 Western Hockey League seasons with Lethbridge Hurricanes and added a 5th and final campaign split between Seattle Thunderbirds and Swift Current Broncos.  His best offensive season was 2014-2015 when he had 26 goals and 54 points in 66 games and was invited to attend camp with NHL’s Montreal Canadiens.  In 328 Jr. appearances, Watson recorded 88 goals and 181 points.

“The most noticeable thing about Jamal when he takes the ice is the way he can skate,” said Paul Dixon. “He can get around the ice as well or better than anyone, and he uses it to great advantage as he already showed during his first try with us a few years back.”

“He was unquestionably the top Defenceman in the league at that time, and we know he will come back and be an impact player for us once again.”

“Guys with his skill set for skating along with handling and moving the puck are not easy to find on the blue line, and we are excited about what it means for our entire group to be able to slot him back into the blue line unit.”
