2000-2001

The 2000-2001 season, saw a change of uniform and colours for the Flames and just as they did after their last uniform change in 97-98, the Guildford Flames went on to great success by winning the British National League and Findus British National League Playoffs.

Rob Lamey passed a personal milestone by playing his 250th game for the Flames. There was also a low in the organisation as longest serving and top point scoring Flame; Ryan Campbell, retired from the game and moved back to Canada once the season was over. Ryan also worked for the Flames as Commercial Manager and was instrumental in creating the solid foundations that now allow the Guildford Flames to be one of the most professionally run clubs. Ryan had his number 10 retired immediately and it now hangs from the rafters never to be worn again. Fred Perlini, who last played in the 96-97 season, also had his number 11 retired.

The season started off well for the Flames when they claimed The Baker Tilly Shield in it's inaugural season by defeating the SuperLeage's Bracknell Bees.

The Flames continued their success and went on to compete in the last ever Benson & Hedges Plate Final where they were involved in a fantastic game of hockey. In the dying minutes of the game the Bison scored the winner after both teams dominated at times throughout the match. At this time, around December, the league was looking mouthwatering with 5 or 6 teams in contention, and every fixture being a battle. At the Christmas break, the Flames found themselves lying in 4th spot.

After the break, the Flames went on an astounding 24 game win-streak rampaging through the ntl: Cup and the British National League. The Flames were victorious in the ntl: Cup beating the Fife Flyers in a two-leg final and raising the trophy in Fife in February. The win-streak meant that the last game of the season, between Baisingstoke and Guildford at the Spectrum, would decide who was the British National League Champions for the 00-01 season. The Flames were victorious in their home arena in front of a capacity crowd of screaming Bison and Flames fans in this finale to the British National League, which could not have been better scripted.

The Flames' fantastic form continued into the British National League Playoffs where they were once again victorious dropping only one point in an over-time loss away to Peterborough.

Following this success, we were sorry to lose the services of Wayne "Reggie" Crawford; and Barcley Pearce, both of whom retired after serving the club so well. Coach Stan Marple now faced a mountain to climb if the success was to be repeated in the 2001 - 2002 season.
